When people hear we’re travelling full-time around Australia with our kids in a caravan, their first reaction is usually:
“That’s the dream!”
And honestly? It is.
But what makes it possible for us — and many other families — isn’t endless savings or retirement.
It’s working while we travel. Yes, even with toddlers in tow and a home that moves on wheels!
Whether you’re dreaming about hitting the road or you’re already on it, here’s a real look at what it’s like to explore Australia in a caravan with kids while pausing in places to earn an income.
Why We Chose This Life
We didn’t want to wait until our kids were grown to start travelling.
We wanted them to experience nature, connect as a family, and learn from the world around them — not just from books or behind a desk.
But we also didn’t want to be stuck in a never-ending “holiday” that we couldn’t afford long-term.
So we found a rhythm that works for us: travel ➜ work ➜ explore again.
The Reality of Working From the Road
Here’s what a typical work stint might look like for us:
After travelling for as long as we like (and budget allows) we then find somewhere nearby that has enough schools to pick up relief teaching work.
We’ve met families who do everything from remote teaching, graphic design, and trades, to running online stores.
The secret? Flexibility and Wi-Fi (Starlink).

Travelling With Kids: The Wild & Wonderful Bits
Let’s be honest — travelling with kids isn’t always smooth sailing. But it is rewarding.
The Challenges:
- Nap times in the car (or not).
- Limited space and routines.
The Magic:
- Watching your kids spot their first kangaroo in the wild and chasing it.
- Eating dinner under the stars.
- Splashing in waterholes and chasing crabs on remote beaches and rock holes.
- Learning through living — every single day.
Kids adapt quickly, especially when they feel safe and included. We build in regular downtime and keep toys, books, and simple routines to make van life feel stable.
How We Make It Work Financially
We chose to stick to what we know for income, myself (Abby) teaching and Aidan with hands on gigs especially on the mechanical side, while building up businesses on the online world:
The beauty of parking up for extended periods at a time is being able to get into a consistent routine, a break from constant moving, and focused time to work.
Sometimes it’s from a picnic table under a gumtree.
Other times it’s editing content in the car for some place quiet.
Is it perfect? No.
But it’s working — and that’s the dream on our terms.
Final Thoughts: You Can Do This
Travelling Australia with your kids doesn’t mean giving up your income.
And working while you travel doesn’t mean missing out on the adventure.
It just means designing a lifestyle where your work supports your freedom — not the other way around.
If you’re dreaming of this kind of life, it’s possible.
Messy, magical, flexible, fulfilling — and totally worth it. You just need to get started and iron out the creases as you go.
